SaturdayCelebrity Fight Night event keeps the crowds coming
ARIZONA REPUBLIC:
The JW Marriott Desert Ridge ballroom in Phoenix will be filled with 1,200 guests each of whom paid nearly $2,000 to attend. The event's executive director for the ninth year is Sean Currie. Grammy Award-winning singer Reba McEntire is the host. The featured guest is Muhammad Ali, who has attended 10 straight years. The founder and brains behind Fight Night is Phoenix businessman Jimmy Walker. Walker has been in the life insurance business since age 16, following in his father's footsteps. 'This event is important for the (Barrow Neurological Institute's) Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center as it raises substantial dollars to help with their operations, to the community and because of the exposure and awareness it gives to Parkinson's disease,' Walker said. He is the president of the sports, entertainment and business planning division of Walker & Hebets, a consulting firm with 3,000 clients, among them 250 professional athletes and entertainers. He is a trustee on the Barrow Neurological Foundation board and serves on the board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix. During the past 12 years, Walker and Celebrity Fight Night have provided funding for more than 30 Valley charities. Among the local beneficiaries have been the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Childhelp USA, Crisis Nursery, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix and Young Life. The list of past participants and performers reads like a celebrity who's who: Evander Holyfield, Michael Bolton, Bo Derek, Michael J. Fox, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chevy Chase, Barry Manilow, Donna Summer, Lionel Richie, Celine Dion, Halle Berry, Barry Bonds, Emmitt Smith and Dennis Quaid. In 1996, when Ali became a principal participant, the focus turned to Parkinson's disease, which touches 1.5 million Americans and of which 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Most of the funds raised by Celebrity Fight Night benefit Phoenix's Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute. A live auction features distinctive items, including a meal with Paul Newman and tour of his Connecticut ranch." |
