ThursdayParkinson's patient finds voice..Therapy helps him regain ability to speak clearly
MORE"Rudy Roof is an insurance broker, and even in his so-called retirement he handles the accounts of more than 20 longtime clients.
When Roof, now 76, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 12 years ago, it had little immediate impact on his business or the rest of his life until, slowly, the classic symptoms — tremors, slowness of movement, rigidity and poor balance — grew more severe. Another, less noted symptom of Parkinson's is difficulty with speech. The sufferer's voice often becomes breathy, mumbled or hoarse, as muscles in the throat, chest and abdomen grow weak. In Roof's case, his voice would trail off to an inaudible whisper. "I noticed it when he was talking to clients on the phone. I couldn't hear him, and I was standing in the same room," said his wife, Ellyn Roof." |
