Volunteers needed for research project on Parkinson's disease
(Media-Newswire.com) - BIDDEFORD - Volunteers are needed for a research project within the University of New England's Occupational Therapy Department that will evaluate the effectiveness of a short-term occupational therapy ( OT ) program in persons with Parkinson's disease. The project will evaluate the effectiveness of the program on functional activity performance, movement initiation, posture, strength and quality of life in order to help therapists design better programs for persons with Parkinson's disease. Participants in the study will receive 10 free one-hour OT sessions over five weeks, as well as three two-hour assessments. Participants will also be contacted nine months after the program to measure long-term effects. Therapy sessions will focus on improving coordination, balance, strength, thinking skills, breathing, daily living skills and posture. Sessions and assessments will take place on the University Campus in Biddeford. Referrals will be taken through Monday, March 26. Participants will need an order for occupational therapy from their physician. Men and women diagnosed with Parkinson's disease are invited to participate. Criteria include the ability to walk 50 feet, with or without the use of a walker, cane or handheld assistance; and the ability to hear a drum beat. Persons in a regular exercise program now or taking occupational or physical therapy at this time may need to make some adjustments to programs in order to participate. To participate or for more information contact Principal Investigator Beth Moyer at ( 207 ) 602-2539. |
